Series 7 Countdown: Worst 2009 Special

As Series 7 draws ever nearer, I am going to be publishing countdown posts. For each post I will write about my most memorable episode from that series and also a separate article for my least favourite episode of that series. (The 2009 Specials and the Christmas Special's will both have there separate articles) Today's article is on my least favourite 2009 Special. The episodes that count for being a 2009 Special are Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars, The End of Time: Part 1 and The End of Time: Part 2.

Planet of the Dead

Planet of the Dead wasn't a bad episode at all, there was just a few points about it that I disliked and it is far off the brilliance of The Waters of Mars and The End of Time.

Christina NOT a companion

The idea of the specials was that The Doctor was travelling alone and in each of the specials he would have a one-off companion with him (Adelaide in The Waters of Mars and Wilfred in The End of Time). In Planet of the Dead, Lady Christina was his 'companion' but she was as far off being a companion as you could get! For one thing, she is a jewel thief and doesn't seem a very nice person. Also, she is on the run from the police and doesn't seem very courageous. To be a companion you have to be a good person and Christina definitely wasn't that!

Not so fast...

I get the idea of the Swarm building up so much speed as they go around a planet that they open up a wormhole and go through to the next planet. Pretty simple. But when you saw the Swarm moving towards the bus they hardly seemed to be going fast at all! Even though there were lots of them, the lack of speed that was seen makes you think that the barriers of time and space must be really weak!

Another kiss

At the end of the episode, once everything was over, Christina done something that made me dislike her even more... She kisses The Doctor! It annoys me when full time companions kiss him but when a one-off does, it is just completely unnecessary.

In Conclusion...

Not bad, but not great either and as we had to wait 7 months for the next special, their was very high hopes on The Waters of Mars and it definitely paid off. Planet of the Dead was overall an average episode and as we were only getting 3 episodes of Doctor Who in 2009, I think RTD could have came up with something a little bit better than he did.

Tomorrow: Best Episode of Series 5
