The Power of Three Review

On Saturday, we saw another Lodger-type episode with a hint of the RTD era in The Power of Three. But did this fair well with me? Time to find out...

Overview
An extremely good episode in terms of emotional themes but the alien threat wasn't tied up enough. Whether, this was deliberate or not, I think a hint about this would have faired well.

Continuity
The Power of Three was almost faultless for continuity, although for this type of an episode, there wasn't actually that many continuity points. However, here are the ones I noticed:

  • The Doctor stayed on Earth with humans for a while (The Lodger)
  • UNIT returned but played a background role, which I liked (The Christmas Invasion, The Sontaran Strategm, The Poison Sky etc)
  • A slight error I noticed was in Asylum of the Daleks, the Pond's got divorced but in this episode they are seen celebrating their wedding anniversary... So did they get re-married off screen?
  • The Zygons were mentioned.
Story Arc
The 'Doctor Who?' arc remained absent throughout this episode but the episode was overall, a prequel to The Angels Take Manhattan so were we given clues as to how the Ponds leave, but we just haven't noticed them?

Story
The Cube story was fairly average and we were all waiting for the big point of the story but sadly it never came. Also, the cube threat was destroyed by a wave of the sonic screwdriver?! The most poor resolution to a story I have seen in a long while.

Problems
Along with the problems I mentioned above (rubbish conclusion, Pond marriage error, too many loose ends), although I did say I quite liked UNIT taking a back seat in this episode, I feel the soldiers could have made more of an appearance.

Shakri
The Shakri were a great invention by Chibnall and I liked the reference to Gallifrey in their background but with a great actor playing the Shakri I feel they could have made more of an appearance and to be honest, the Shakri were wasted in a way in this episode.

Emotional Impact
This episode wasn't really about the alien threat, more about emotional impact and the lead up to the Pond's exit in The Angels Take Manhattan. I liked that part and I think it will make their exit even more dramatic and saddening.

Conclusion

Monsters - 3/5 - Alien threat took a back seat in this episode but the concept of the Shakri was liked by me.

Story - 2/5 - Felt quite rushed towards the end and the conclusion was rubbish, and it could have been more fully explained if bits like the Pond's anniversary gift adventures were left out. However, the beginning of the story was great.

Doctor - 5/5 - Yet another faultless performance from Matt Smith and he finally got to play 'pain' in this episode, which he is very good at.

Companion - 5/5 - Amy and Rory were fantastic characters in this episode and I really don't want to see them leave now...

Arc - 4.5/5 - Great as the episode was a lead up to the Pond exit arc but no reference to 'Doctor Who?' let it down a little bit.

Continuity - 4/5 - Good but the Pond's marriage error and not including many continuity points in an episode like this wasn't a great move

The Power of Three (overall) - 23.5/30 - Great

So that's it for my The Power of Three review. I hope you enjoyed reading it and agreed with me on most points.

Next Week - The Angels Take Manhattan

Overall Mark Comments

30 - Outstanding
25 - 29.5 - Fantastic
20 - 24.5 - Great
15 - 19.5 - OK, nothing special
10 - 14.5 - Bad, very poor
5 - 9.5 - Shocking, turned off after 10 minutes
1.5 - 4.5 - Worst thing to be shown on TV ever
0 - 1 - Doctor Who is over

Kingston: River and Angels

Alex Kingston has spoken about reprising her role as River Song in The Angels Take Manhattan, and the character’s future beyond the episode.

She told The Daily Beast: “River is basically seeing her parents die, seeing them go. God, Steven could have written a whole episode just about that, about the complexities and psychology of that, but he didn’t.

“It is about Amy saying goodbye to the Doctor… and [River] stays much more in the background. But, oh my gosh, I found it hard. I didn’t think I would, just observing them. It was quite emotional.”

However, Kingston thinks the end of the Ponds doesn’t mean it’s the last we’ll see of River.

“Whether River’s journey will come full-circle, I don’t know. How many more episodes or seasons River has, I don’t know that either, but the way that Steven writes, he lays out threads that can be picked up way down the line. For her just to not reappear would be a little strange,” she explained.

So looks like River will be around for a while! What do you think? Do you like River or do you hate her? Leave your comments below if you wish.

Series 7: The Last Day of the Ponds

The BBC has announced that a special farewell video entitled “The Last Days of the Ponds” will premiere on the official site after The Angels Take Manhattan concludes.

Details follow:

The Last Days of the Ponds is a touching, 12 minute video that features Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, head writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat and Executive Producer Caro Skinner. Poignant and insightful it tells their story, from the very start to the teary goodbyes.

With exclusive backstage material from their early days together right up to behind-the-scenes footage of their final shots, The Last Days of the Ponds gives you unprecedented access to an era of Doctor Who, but more than this, it reveals how the people involved feel about their characters and their friends, their time on the show, what they’ll miss and remember and how Amy and Rory’s swansong moved them all.

Karen, Arthur and Matt recall meeting each other for the first time and share anecdotes about their friendship. What did they think of each other at first and what did Arthur consider to be a nightmare? Which days does Karen call the craziest of all, and how was Matt feeling when it came to shooting the Ponds’ departure?

Smith: The Pond's Ain't Coming Back

Matt Smith has promised that it is 'game over' for the Ponds in The Angels Take Manhattan.

Speaking in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, he said: “They ain’t coming back. At least, that’s what Steven says. That’s it. Game over.

“That good, though. I kind of like that Steven has said that. Otherwise… the bringing back of people is difficult. It has to be for really great reasons.”

He added: “What Steven has written in this Angels episode is perfect. You know, there’s something that harks back to The Eleventh Hour, that Steven had thought of about two-and-a-half years ago! Isn’t that remarkable, that it’s been in Steven’s head for that long?

“Like there was a moment in Asylum of the Daleks which I just think is great, it’s one of those ‘What does that mean?’ moments. It’s when Oswin looks to camera and says, ‘Remember me’. The fans are now going, ‘What?! Remember what?’ That’s why it’s important to keep things a secret, because the revelation is the fun bit of sitting down and watching it. With Amy this whole idea of the girl who waited… Steven writes the romance of the show so brilliantly and he understands it. I don’t mean just the Amy/Rory romance, I mean the romance, the theatrical romance."

Series 7: 2013 Format

Steven Moffat has confirmed that the format of Series 7 will remain unchanged in 2013, with each episode continuing to be pitched as a big, standalone, blockbuster-style movie.

Moffat explained in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine: “The movie-of-the-week approach does not stop with the Ponds. It carries on. We keep going. This year – I mean, these 14 episodes, continuing into 2013 – my brief was constantly, ‘Plot from the movie poster outwards. What’s your big visual idea? What’s the log-line of the movie?’ I thought that was a reasonably clever thing to say, but the response from the writers and the crew has been far cleverer than what I said in the first place.”

He continued: “Everyone has really taken it to heart. The design work, the locations, the music, everything this year has been astonishing. I keep wondering when we’re going to fall off our perch, but each episode, even once the Ponds have left us, is looking absolutely amazing.”

Series 7: Even More Power of Three Pictures

50th Anniversary: Shooting Starts Spring 2013

Matt Smith has revealed that Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary will likely begin filming Spring 2013.

In an interview with the Waikato Times, Smith spoke about the plans so far: “[Steven Moffat] was pitching the 50th anniversary at the end of this series and what everything was going to be about and it was a very exciting meal. No doubt he’ll come up with something brilliant because that’s the sort of man he is…

“I hope that we mark it in the best way possible and we honour the people that have been in the show before us and we make it as grand and brilliant and inventive and as much an occasion as possible. What that is, I may have an idea, but I can’t tell you I’m afraid.’’

Asked about multiple Doctors appearing, Smith said: “Who knows? I think it’s an exciting idea. Whether it would be possible, or whether it could ever happen I just don’t know, but whatever we can do to mark that 50th anniversary will be spectacular, that much I do know.’’

‘‘Nothing’s set in stone. I imagine there will be a script knocking around about Christmas and there we will develop further and shoot it next spring.’’

Smith also denied he is quitting any time soon: ‘‘Shock horror. Everyone leaves eventually people. No I’m not leaving any time soon. You know I am coming back for the 50th anniversary. To suggest I am quitting now is wrong,’’ he said.
