Series 7 Countdown: Series 3 Monsters

Today, I shall continue my Series 7 Countdown, by briefly detailing about the main monster and aliens that appeared in Series 3.

Racnoss - The Runaway Bride 

The Racnoss was a strange creature and talked in a tone that was quite hard to understand... But apart from that a giant alien spider tied in well with the Christmas Star (or web) and the whole idea of it being around from the start of the Earth and how it was the centre of the Earth, was highly well thought out. 3/5

Judoon - Smith and Jones 

The introduction of a space police organization was a great idea and I loved the Judoon apart from the fact, why would alien police look like Earth rhinos? Not quite working for me... Loved the language and formality of them though. 4/5

Carrionites - The Shakespeare Code

Witches, like the werewolf of Series 2, was a little too much fairytale for me so the Carrionites weren't one of my favourite's, however they're story was quite interesting but the idea of them being defeated by words was rubbish! Doctor Who is sci-fi not fairytale! 2/5

Macra - Gridlock

A monster-lite episode, saw the return of a classic monster? Why? If you're going to re-introduce something, be sure to give it an episode which actually about it and not just a few seconds on screen. Very disappointed with this decision. 1/5

Daleks - Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks 

The return of the Cult of Skaro saw the worst Dalek two-parter ever written. The Daleks evolving into human-like creatures?! I was totally behind Cann, Thay and Jast by the end as they over through their leader, but of course they got defeated... 3/5

Lazarus - The Lazarus Experiment

Professor Lazarus creature thing, was a pretty bad monster. As I explained in my recent article saying how bad The Lazarus Experiment was, the Lazarus creature was very unbelievable and the questiuon remains, why would Lazarus turn evil and try to kill innocent people? 1/5

The Sun - 42

The whole sun being alive thing was OK but nothing great. Even today, I am still making my mind up on whether it was a little bit too far creating a sun that was alive. Good story but once again we had no alien threatening presence. 3/5

Family of Blood - Human Nature/The Family of Blood

The Family of Blood were grear villains and very memorable. A fantastically written story and an enemy that has so many good factors, I simply can't detail them all in this article. What I will say though is, the Family of Blood saved the monster factor of Series 3, as so far it was very bad. 5/5

Weeping Angels - Blink 

The introduction of the stone statues was by far one of the best Doctor Who episodes ever. The Weeping Angels were introduced shrouded in mystery and I loved how they had actually caught the Doctor! Their appearance is fantastic as they could turn from looking like innocent statues one minute, to claws out, sharp teeth, angry look, the next! 5/5

Futurekind - Utopia

The idea of the futurekind I feel was just to put a monster in to an episode which wasn't really about aliens at all, just the backstory to the series finale. However, the futurekind were not good monsters and how they could be humans is weird, as why on earth would humans in the future turn stupid, rabid and tribal all of a sudden? 1/5

The Master - Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords 

The re-introduction of THE classic villain was absolutely mind blowing! For one, he actually won... for a year, anyway! Two, he's mental and will stop at nothing to achieve universal domination. And three, he's a genius but his biggest fear is something that it shouldn't be... The Doctor! A friend, even after the hell The Master puts him through for 'the year that never was', all the way to their deaths. 5/5

And my favourite is...

Weeping Angels or The Master

It's an impossible decision as both really turned Series 3 around in the monster way of things and both had two of the most fantastic Doctor Who stories ever!

And my least favourite is...

Futurekind

Although I really dislike Lazarus, at least his episode was actually about him whereas the Futurekind, in my opinion, were not really needed and I feel the episode would have been just as good, albeit slighly altered, without them.

In Conclusion...

A series which started off average and then by episode 6/7, was pretty shocking in the monster factor. But as of episode 8 (except episode 11) the series featured some timeless classics which will remain with us Whovians, forever.

Series 7 Countdown: Worst Series 3

As Series 7 draws ever nearer, I am going to start publishing countdown posts. For each post I will write about my most memorable episode from that series and also a separate article for my least favourite episode of that series. (The 2009 Specials and the Christmas Special's will both have there separate articles) Today's article is on my least favourite episode of Series 3.

The Lazarus Experiment

This episode is OK. And thats all it is. It doesn't have any edge of your seats moments, unless you can count when Martha is clinging on to the floor about to fall, and it features one of the most weirdest creations Doctor Who has ever seen. Let me try and tell you why I feel this episode isn't up to Doctor Who's usual standard.

A Slow Start

The episode has all been leading up to the moment where Professor lazarus is supposed to perform some sort of miracle but I feel it had too much of a lead up and in the first 10 minutes of the episode nothing really happened, but we were all waiting for the moment when we saw what Lazarus' experiment was.

Years Too Young

The fact that Lazarus was human asks the question, how on earth can he turn himself younger? Maybe slow aging and I would have believed it but actually making himself younger seem impossible for even the brightest human to create.

The Creature

Ever since Lazarus came out of the machine, I thought that this episode might be one of those just-a-little-too-much-impossible episodes... which it turned out to be just that. Lazarus turning into a massive creature with a scorpion like tail and a skeletal body, was one of the most weirdest, impossible and stupid creations that Doctor Who has ever came up with.

In Conclusion...

Quiet a lot less than average, was what this episode turned out to be and I was quiet disappointed by Mark Gatiss' creature and I think that the ending was very poor as if a piano could knock out a creature, shouldn't it have fried the Doctor, Martha and Tish's brains?

Series 7 Countdown: Best Series 3

As Series 7 draws ever nearer, I am going to start publishing countdown posts. Last of the Time Lords

This episode symbolizes everything that makes Doctor Who, Doctor Who. Last of the Time Lords showcases a planet struggle, a great companion, a ruthless enemy and edge-of-your-seat moments that make you wonder, how is it all going to end?

NOTE: Of course, we had Blink, undoubtedly one of the best episodes ever! But, I think Last of the Time Lords is much more emotional than Blink, however both episodes contained two of the best enemies Doctor Who has ever known.

The Gun

The revelation about what Martha had been doing during the year since The Sound of Drums was pretty shocking as we thought that she was against guns, but if you had been living the way she had for a year, that would be enough to change the best of people. But of course, as revealed later in the episode, the gun was just a decoy to hide what she was actually doing!

An Aged Doctor

It was really shocking to see the Doctor as an old man, but even more shocking to see him as a tiny little creature! This just showed how the Master had no compassion to the man who used to be his best friend. The thing I liked about the Doctor being powerless, was how Martha was aloud to come in and save the day herself. Usually it's the companion who's trapped and the Doctor has to go and save them!

The Master Plan

The Master's plan was very bad but I think we all secretly loved it! I would liked to have seen his war against the universe, as this makes him seem Dalek-like, but obviously it would have been a little too late for the Doctor to stop him.

A Flying Doctor

Ok, I will admit that this episode had a few flaws. One being the slight exaggeration that as the Doctor got younger, he was somehow able to fly... But I feel the scene itself was really nice and it would have fitted in nicely, if we had got an explanation as to why/how the Doctor was flying.

Rewinding Time

The Rewinding Time bit was another flaw but if you think about it, how else could they have stopped the Master? Even if they managed to kill him, they still had millions of Toclafane to deal with.

Goodbye Martha

I really liked Martha's goodbye scene as it saw her leaving the Doctor as her choice and it wasn't all doom and gloom like it usually is (Rose, Donna and probably Amy and Rory). I think more happier goodbye's to companions is in order now and again and when the time comes that Clara leaves, I hope the door is left open for her to return (even though we know nothing about her yet!).

In Conclusion...

A great episode with some very memorable moments and had a very exciting end - the Titanic crashing into the TARDIS! Although there was a couple of flaws, the episode showed how good  Martha was and that she thoroughly deserved to be a companion and I hope she comes back someday as I really liked her (even though she fancied the Doctor...). So Series 3 finished on a high and we all couldn't wait until Christmas Day!
